Connecting CMP Energy Manager to Power House

Signing up for CMP and then Power House is confusing.  Here is a video we made to help you with the last step.  So far you have signed up for Energy Manager with CMP.  Now you will connect the CMP account with Power House at GMRI .  When you do this your energy data can be used in our science class.  Tim and Nancy will help us think about how we use power in our houses.  Families can probably do this too because they can look at the data anytime.  Here are the steps: If you have not signed up for CMP Energy manager visit GMRI for more informatio n You can also follow the information for a Mystery House by reading a blog: http://gmripowerhouse.wordpress.com/

Hola

Hola!!! (Hi.) Last week we finished our español (spanish) skits. We were requested by Señor Dan to write a skit in all español. And we all completed them! The skits often incorporated humorous elements and often included falling, screaming and running away from “cocodrilos” and “una estampída de armadillos”. Here are a few examples: Video One Video Two - Amber

Spring!!

Spring has sprung or just tackled winter out of the picture. Spring is going to take over the frozen land. How many people cannot wait for flowers?  Spring is telling mother nature, "I am here. Bring those flowers and that sunlight and make this world a fire of petals, color, and life!" We can't help but notice that Spring is coming!!! Its coming!!! So close!!! Ahh, there it is. Much better! Spring is great. We have finally gotten out of our thick white cocoons and feel the sunlight on all of our faces the snow has melted. We have started playing Capture the Flag at recess. The windows are opening a crack. We also have to bring less things to school. We are not tripping over boots in the hallway. What changes do you see because of spring? - Owen

Transition to Middle School

This year’s fifth graders are in for the loong haul because they have to get ready for sixth grade next year and do their best fifth grade work.  Fifth graders are going to go over to Middle School several times so that they can get a taste from their guides and teachers on what sixth grade is all about.  Their guides are carefully chosen based on similarities so that they can have the best possible experience in sixth grade.  The fifth graders first experience is going to a Middle School assembly to just have a little "lick" of the whole ice cream cone of the transition.  A Middle School advising group gave us a fun presentation. After that fifth graders spend three classes in sixth grade to see what the teachers are like and to get a taste of what’s ahead.  It then builds up gradually until the ice cream cone is empty and you are ready for sixth grade!   I’m Julia reporting from 4-5 with the updates from school. -Julia

All-School Assembly - Kindness

On Thursday, April 4, 2013 all of the Waynflete School came together. This is exciting because people can see their siblings and friends from grades EC through12.  We (the 4-5ers) sang with the Upper School and Middle School chorus. They had a amazing background voices! The conductor of the chorus was and Upper School student that Tim knew in another school when she was a 5th grader. Her name was Jo. She was great in leading us. The theme of this assembly was” Random Acts of Kindness” because it is Mark Segar’s last year here. A while ago someone asked him what he thought made Waynflete different and said “kindness”. The 4-5ers wrote down random acts of kindness. It could have been what they did kind or what someone did to us. We then went to the audience and handed them out. Maybe someone will do those things to other people and it will spread. -Tafari and Nahum

Independent Projects (IPs) and Expert Letters

I.P.’s are really fun to do and you learn a lot about your topic and other topics too. We learned how to take notes on our book as we read it. Then we learned how to put it together to make up a paper. We typed it up and the teachers helped us with edits. And then you present it in front of the class. Its really really fun. When you hear other IPs you get to learn about lots of things like places, animals, people, and other things. Once you get it done it feels so good and you get to watch people get the same feeling. - Eliza   As a part of our I.P. project, we wrote letters to an expert on our topic so we could learn more information and to ask questions. Some of us got letters back but unfortunately some of us didn’t get them yet. Some of the people who did g...

Aubrey the Word Mover

Word Mover is an interactive iPad application that allows students to experiment with poetry.  Here is Aubrey's latest exploration:

Poetry

Ugly by Maya Turndorf Ugly. The word that hurts. You look in the mirror Unhappy with your appearance. You're sad. Why’s that? That girl who was mean Said you looked bad today. Sadness creeps to your mind and heart. Stay strong. The Wonders of the Sea  by Aubrey Meza I sit on the edge of a faraway land, with my feet trailing in the white sand, I jump off the rock from which I stand, and let the water take my hand. I look around at the surroundings that be, and start to wonder what wonder may be, far below in the depths of the sea, I hold my breath, and plunge into the cave. Schools of krill zip right past me, starting with wonder, I wonder what’s happening, when I see a whale as dark as the midnight sky, blue as the ocean, graceful as the groundhog is shy.   Finally I see, right above me, the sun sparkling down upon the sea. My lungs start to burst, and I panic at first, but then I rise up with the wave...

Collage

In art class we have been working on collage’s for our Costa Rica study.  We have put a lot of hard work into it. How we made this project is that we collected pieces of cloth and put it on a piece of paper and it stuck because of the stichwitchery. Then we sewed a picture of animal on. The animal was an animal we studied for Costa Rica. After that we made a border for our project which was usually a different color. The collage work turned out to be a really good idea for a project and all the ones that I saw were great.                            - Harry M.

Capture The Flag

Recently at break a lot of 4-5ers have been playing capture the flag. The point of capture the flag is to get the flag from one side to another without being tagged If you get tagged you have to go to jail. In order to get out of jail you have to get tagged by a teammate and in some versions you get a free walk back to your side and sometimes you have to make it to your side without being tagged again. In one other version the person that freed you does not have a free walk and has to make it across without being tagged. Often times there are 10 or more people on a team. Sometimes there is a safe box around the flag where people are safe while they wait to run the flag to the other side. While you are running the flag and you notice you can’t make it the only way to go back into the safe place is to give the flag to someone else. - Theo
