Dollar Words

The Dollar Word Challenge is a challenge where you have to get exactly one dollar (100 pennies) from the way words are spelled. Every letter in the alphabet is worth something. A=.01, B=.02, C=.03....X=.24, Y=.25, Z=.26 One of the words a classmate came up with the word, zazzle. So far we almost have 20 words. Anyone can do it. Maybe you can share a word with us? Violet

iPads in 4-5

In 4-5 we have a 1:1 iPad system. That means we each get our own iPad to use at school for various things. We have some fun apps like Drawing Pad, PopWords and SparkleFish and some apps for work like Google Drive. We have spent time in WW building our folders. We also explored Explain Everything. The iPads are very popular during free time because of the fun apps. I like to use the app PopWords and later in the year we might get an app called TinkerBox which is, in my opinion, very fun. In TinkerBox you get to solve puzzles by adding pieces to machines to make a marble fall into a bucket or you can create your own levels for others to try to complete. I think the iPads are a great addition though I have nothing to compare it with! - Jacob

PE in September

In P.E. we are doing community games. We are doing this to get to know each other and build chemistry. Two homestations are with Elicia (Nancy and Linda) and the other 2 are with Guy (Kai and Tim). We are with Elicia. We played a game called Traffic Jam. There was another game where there were 2 teams and both teams were working together. Both teams were holding the same rope, and there was a line in the middle. Both teams were trying to get to the other side of the of the line with the rope in their hand. we worked together and did it in about 5 seconds. Community games was fun but now were doing soccer and field hockey. by Gabe and Jasper

Marsh Genius Hour

Later today we will think about what we want to learn more about in the marsh. Our teachers told us we are going to do a genius hour for the marsh and we will have our own idea. We had a community meeting to brainstorm ideas. Tim and Kai wrote the ideas on a padlet and Linda and Nancy called on us. Here are our ideas from the brainstorm. What would you pick? What would you do for your project if you could do one? Created with Padlet

Crescent Beach and Scarborough Marsh

On Friday September 12, 2014, we went to Crescent Beach for a field trip. We splashed around in the little river while other people made dams with the river water. We also went swimming and made sandcastles the water was really cold. Some people just relaxed. There were also seagulls that stole other people’s lunches while other people played soccer on the beach. We went there after visiting the Scarborough salt marsh. That was a trip to help us learn about the marsh. The visit to the beach was a community building trip so we could learn about each other. -Lolie, Grace, and Vera

Circle Paintings

Words, words, words!

During Opening Reception we wrote down some words in Nancy's class. She asked us about a word to describe our summer and something that we are looking forward to this summer. Here are all the answers in a word cloud! What we are looking forward to: Words about our summer: What are your words?

48 Hours

School has started and today is our second day. We have been getting to know each other.  Each morning we have had a morning meeting. During morning meeting we have learned people's names. We also do activities. In Tim's homestation we have played Peaceball. Peaceball helps us learn names and how to move peacefully around the room. The ball smells like grapes. In PE we played chuck the chicken and did a dowel dance. We also had a human scavenger hunt. We learned things about each other. We had to ask people questions and learned their differences. It sparked conversations. We are also working on a circle painting. We will be painting circle-like things silently and each homestation will make their own. Next week we will be exploring new things and learning more. Violet, Alex, Henry H., Henry W., Eli, Cole, Keegan, Charlie.
