One Word

This week we did one word. One word is when we think of one word and then write it down as our New Year's resolutions. We brainstormed resolutions when we came back to school at the beginning of January. Then we thought about one word that connects to them. We also looked for a good picture to go with it. In the end we explained out one word. Here is an example: WRITING I would like to do more descriptive Writing and use more colors. I feel Like I am always rushing and I need Slow down and think more -Yasmeen Everyone in Tim’s homestation did one. Other ones are Learn, Read, Cook, Conquer, Create, Play and more.   by Kirby The board in progress

Zarina Home Project in the Art Studio

We are doing a project on an Indian woman named Zarina. She had to immigrate because  India was split in half so she had to immigrate to the USA. Zarina started art in the 1980’s. So our project is we made symbols  that reminded us of home. Stella did a house. Fiona did a tractor and other symbols. Zarina inspired us with our project. Zarina really inspired us a lot. She is an amazing women for us all. We love that we get to critique it all too with our class. Critique means that other people look at your work and they say what they see and what more you could do with it. by Fiona and Stella

Pachanga

Pachanga is a Spanish word for party and joyful gathering. I'll start out with a question, what is Pachanga? Well, pachanga is a time for the lower school (E.C to 5th grade) to join together and sing community songs and some times the ECers make mini songs. For example : “I'm gonna eat my kale with chicken.” There are also musicians that play instruments to the songs. And sometimes we sit with our buddies which are kindergarteners and 1st graders. What do we do? They start off with an opening song and after that song the 4-5 announcers say what songs we are singing today for instance: “Father Painted The Parlor” and “Waltzing with Bears.” The announcers also announce any birthdays around the week (and Weekends). EVeryone in 4-5 gets a chance to announce in one year, the people are chosen randomly. For instance: If Vivian and Duncan are in the same homestation their teacher would probably pick them because Vivian is a 5th grade girl and Duncan is a 4th grade boy. ...

The Start of our Japan Study By Ian and William

Starting on 1/3/17 the 4-5 started there Japan studies. We went to our first  theme class we got split into four mixed groups: ichi, ni, san, and shi which means 1,2,3,4 i n Japanese. 1 was with Tim , 2 was with Kai, three with Linda, and four was with Nancy. In Nancy's class we started making Shibori. Shibori is an art where you sew and dye fabric. It makes complex designs.              In Linda’s class we read books about Japan and learned about their culture. One interesting fact about Japan is that the Japanese birth rate is one of the slowest in the world. In Tim’s class we learned about earthquakes, volcanoes, and the Ring of Fire. It has to do with Japan because earthquakes are a big part of their culture. We had worksheets and a map to get information from. In Kai’s class we read a Japanese legend about the rabbit in the moon. We also made an origami monkey and an origami rabbit because they related ...

Family Tree Project by Duncan and Shane

We had an assignment to make a family tree. We had three weeks to get information and make the final draft. People made posters, Ian made his out of Legos. Everyone shared the information they gathered with the class. Kai made a graph of where all of 4-5’s ancestors were from. Here's what it looks like: It was interesting to see where everyone came from and how many people came from Ireland and England.

Buddy Trip by Casey Curtis and Max Hanson

We went on a Waynflete bus to the Fore River Fields with our K-1 buddies. When we got there we went in the woods and played with snow. Vivian and her buddy built a snow fort and Casey and her buddy were slipping and sliding on ice. Max and his buddy worked on a snow fort too. A bunch of people rolled down the field hill. It was a sunny, warm day. It was a lot of fun and we hope we go back there with our buddies in the snow again.

New PE Units: Volleyball and Create a Game

For P.E. we are doing volleyball and create a game. Create a game is where get split into groups in our P.E. class and then create our own game with a certain number of materials. In Create a game we brainstorm a bunch of ideas and then narrow it down to one idea. Also in Create a game we take lots of ideas from other games or  other people in our groups and put them together to try and make one game afterwards. We will judge the games while our classmates play them. In Volleyball you play first to 25. In volleyball we are working on our bump, set, Spike and serve. For more details of volleyball and create your own game stay tuned, for our adventures have just begun. By Miles, Lucy, and Tipton In PE 4-5 is doing create-a-game and volleyball. Create-a-game is where you split up into groups and each group creates a game and presents it and every one plays the game. An example we made up is called Kill The Cone. The idea is to try to steal the cone. And the other group plays...
