Electricity in Science

In science we are studying electricity. We have been making circuits with batteries, light bulbs and wires. Today we had a challenge to make the light bulb glow brighter. We thought all we have to do was to get more than one battery, buuuuut it's more complicated than that. At first we just connected the wires to batteries and the light bulb. It did not work becaaaaauuuse the electrons were not flowing in the same way. There were too many paths. So we needed to connect the ends of the batteries not the sides to create one pathway for the electrons to flow. before     after Jenny and Rosey

Citizenship Ceremony

Today we went to a citizenship ceremony that was part of our immigration study but we couldn’t go in the fall because there wasn’t a ceremony then. It was interesting to see how it all played out. It was cool to know how hard everyone worked to get to that moment and how happy they were when they got their citizenship papers. Family and friends gave new citizens presents like pineapples and pinwheels. There were 30 people who became new citizens and they came from 18 countries including Vietnam, Ireland, Ethiopia, Iran, Sudan, Brazil, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Russia and more. At the end the judge told a story about a Polish family that ran away from their village during WWII. The mom, Malka and her kids, George and Judith went to Italy and then to Bangor, Maine. The dad died unexpectedly. Even though George and Judith were new to America and couldn't speak English at first, they studied hard in school. George got a scholarship to UMaine and then to Harvard. He then beca...

IPs Start!

Each year we do IPs where we choose a topic to study and do lots of research on it. We each get a book from the library, write an expert, get good information on websites, and use a database to get good articles. For example, some of the IP topics are: sea urchins, bees, puffins, Charles Schultz, Mt. Fuji, Harriet Tubman, Statue of Liberty, hockey, Russell Wilson, Marie Curie, and many more! For the last two weeks we have worked to take notes on our topic with either note cards or google docs. We also write a letter to an expert. Once we are done we will type it into a paper and present it. You also make a visual aid on it. You can make a drawing or a sculpture etc. It is very fun and exciting. By Jane and Noa. Every year in february we start I.P.s, wich stands for independent project. We travel to the library to collect our book. This year we, the authors, have chosen The White House and Marie Curie. A fun fact about Marie Curie is that she was the first person to win tw...

Circus Arts

This week some of us had circus arts in PE! It's a combination of different activities including, stilts, trampoline and rope climbing. For stilts there are levels and a little obstacle course to go with it, once you get through the obstacle you pass the level. Basically, you just get to play with really fun stuff and work on coordination and concentration! Ivy really enjoyed stilts because she got to level fifteen on stilts and last year she only got level three. Ivy and Jack In PE we did circus arts including stilts, magic sticks, diabolos, hula hoops, climbing ropes, trampoline, springboard, juggling, pogo sticks, jump ropes, balancing feathers, and spinning plates. For stilts there are five basic levels and fifteen other levels that create the five main levels. Magic sticks are two sticks that you hold and one stick that you can throw up in the air and do tricks with. That has frills on the ends. Diabolos are two sticks that have a string that attaches them together and there ...
