Immigration Interviews

This year we have been working on an Immigration Study which helped us talk about the Industrial Revolution, The Great Migration, and modern immigration. To learn more, we are interviewing people who have immigrated to the United States and sharing their stories through writing. We have been asking them a lot of questions about how they left their home country, why, and what their emotions were. Before we started doing the interviews we prepared questions and practiced (here are some of the questions). We also made a plan . When we were talking with our interviewee we took notes about their answers . After the interview we wrote a nonfiction story about them and the country that they came from. These aren’t boring stories because we got to add our own touches. Some of the people we interviewed had some amazing stories. Like one one of the people left their home country when they were 11. Sometimes, people got separated from their families. Some people came from Canada, Ethiopia, Mexic...

Spirit Week 2020

Spirit week is very fun. Every day for a week you dress up or do whatever the theme is. We had a committee and they made the plan for us. For spirit week at Waynflete the schedule was, Monday: pajama day Tuesday: dress up as your family member or favorite character day Wednesday: wacky Wednesday Thursday: favorite color day Friday: mythical/ mystical day It was soooooo fun! My favorite day was Monday! PJ day! Spirit week is optional, though I did all of the days even though I did not have a lot of costumes. It was fun making costumes from what I could find at home. I think that maybe you should try this at your home too! By Hailey

Spring Is Here

As a lot of people know, spring is here! Crocuses have been popping up everywhere! Also, tulips and daffodils have shown themselves. It’s really nice to see some springy things sprin kled into the gardens! They can make people smile everywhere. I know I am in a better mood after I have seen a couple flowers outside they are beautiful! How about you? What is your favorite flower? Add your thoughts to the comment box. Flipgrid

Flipgrid is an app on our iPads where you get to share a short video with your class. For example, how about a DIY show? You get to take a 2-5 minute DIY video! What is a DIY? Good question! A DIY is a do-it-yourself video and it’s very fun! The best part about Flipgrid is that you can watch other people’s videos. It is only our class that can see the video, a nd our teacher has to approve the video and last…i t is for school so you are also supposed to do school thingr like, r ead our poems to our class which we did for WW or read a part of our book which we did for Lit. I like using Flipgrid. -HJ

MSBA Results

Today the results of which MSBA book had won the most votes at Waynflete were announced. Laurel came to our closing meeting to tell us and we were excited! The book was Bob by Wendy Mass and Rebecca Stead. Tims homestation read Bob and our overall rating was 5 stars out of 5! We all really enjoyed it. It’s about a girl named Livy who goes to stay with her grandmother who lives in Australia. When Livy gets there she discovers a friendly green zombie looking thing in her closet named Bob. Can she figure out what Bob is and how to get him back home? The story shares their adventures of trying to figure out what Bob is and where his home is. You should read it and let us know what you think about it. Daphne ( Here are the past winners )

Purple Stew

This has been a great week mostly because I was in Pachanga! Me and my friends sang the song Purple stew! It was really fun. The sad thing was that it was the last week of us singing Purple Stew. We are so lucky because we still have Pachanga! Wait a minute… what is Pachanga?!?! Pachanga is a gathering and we sing songs and it is very fun! I am very thankful that we have Pachanga and school  -hj You might want to know what the lyrics are to the song. We're making a Purple Stew whip whip whip whip we 're making a purple stew shoo bee doo bee doo! With purple potatoes and purp le tomatoes and we want you! DIY Pirouette

In our class, Tim had us each make our own DIY video from home. I did mine on how to do a basic dance pirouette! That is for many reasons. I love dance, it is my absolute favorite thing to do. It really helps me if I’ve had a bad day, or something bad is currently going on in the world (coronavirus etc.), I can just put on a song and dance. Genuinely dance. And then everything else around me slowly fades away. I can just really show my emotions through the song choice and my body movements and isolations.  Now let me mention my dance environment. My dance friends are the most supportive and loving friends you could ever have. I’d like to say that my dance friends are my family, and my dance studio is my home away from home! So, I made the DIY pirouette video to be able to show everyone the real gift of dancing. No, it doesn’t stop the problems at school or home. No, it doesn’t stop you from being afraid or sad or scared entirely, but for those moments when you...

At Home Week 3

Waynflete is homeschooling and that means that we are at home and I am sitting in my sunroom and typing this up. I like working at home. I especially like having lunch with my family and friends (online). I am so grateful that we have school online. Without school, I would be bored to death. My class in 4-5 has a morning meeting at 8:30 a nd then we have a meeting at 11:30 that is optional so we can check in, and then the last meeting is at 2:30. We get a read aloud at that meeting! HJ

Pet Day

Since we’ve been quarantined at home and we have had to use an app called BlueJeans to see each other for classes. Yesterday, Wednesday, March 18 we had a show your pet day! for Morning Meeting. A lot of us wanted to have a bring your pet to school day but people were allergic so now was the chance! But you can’t smell or touch using BlueJeans so our teacher said yes! There were so many animals ranging from hedgehogs to hamsters with pets A to Z in between. I saw: A Hamster A hedgehog  Lots and lots of dogs A few fish 2 cats  A Guinea pig And a parrot It was so fun! Daphne

Work From Home

This week we are working from home. We will work online and still treat it like a normal school day but we are at home. I think some people might like this better, like me, because you are at home so  you can sit on your couch or your bed while you are reading instead of sitting in a chair or a crazy creek. But some people might rather be in school because they might like sitting in a chair better while they are working. But, being in school lets you be with friends and get work done.  Here are some people working from home. They brought their pets to morning meeting. We couldn't do that if we were at school. LEL

IPs 2020

In 4-5 we are doing IPs or Independent Projects. We get to pick and study different topics. First, we went to the library to pick out our topics. We can choose five topics that we like and rate them. Next, we read our books and we take notes from our books. We can take notes on Drive or on notecards. Along the way we use a graphic organizer called a pillar to plan our paper and we write a letter to an expert for extra facts. We also get articles from InfoBits to read and get even more information. Then we start writing our reports and make visual aids. The whole prosses takes 6 weeks and in the end we present our to our family and class. Some of the topics in our class are Jane Goodall, Yosemite, Vanilla, Louisianna Purchase, George Washington Carver, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Climate Change, Maya Angelou, Volcanoes, Geysers, Marie Curie, People Of The Southwest, and Food Chains.   Asahel and Harper

Global Focus Food

Every year in January we study a country, this year the country was Iceland. We also do some cooking as a home station each year. For this blog we decided to review some of the food we got to try. 5 stars means we liked it a lot and one star means we did not enjoy it. The recipes will be linked below the review. Cabbage: JJ: ★ Emile: ★ We both didn’t really enjoy this dish because it was very tangy. The cinnamon was a little offsetting and overall it was pretty bland. The blueberries also made it little too sweet for cabbage. Fish Chowder: JJ:★★★★ Emile:★★★★ We both liked this dish. It was a fairly thin stew with lots of delicious vegetables and fish. Thunder Bread: JJ:★★★★★ Emile:★★★★  This dish is a mouthwatering rich bread. It is sweet, healthy and dense. We both loved this bread and recommend it. We think it would be fun to make at home! Yogurt Pie: JJ: ★★ Emile: ★★★ We both thought that this dish was fine but the yogurts consistency was a little strange for a p...

Winter Buddies

On Friday, 1/24/2020 we had an extra recess with our K-1 Buddies. Every other Friday we meet our Buddies. Sometimes we read or do projects like gingerbread cookies before vacation. This time we went outside! We had a ton of fun including building snow people, sledding and playing a big game of tag. It was fun to be out in the afternoon sun. Tobey and Dylan

Iceland Units

In 4-5 we do something called units. Units is where we learn about different subjects, usually in science or history. Once a year the whole Lower School does a unit together and it is called Global Focus. We pick one culture to learn and this year it is Iceland. In 4-5 we have workshops about Iceland. One of the workshops is turf houses. We all get 23 popsicle sticks and a bag of dirt and a glue stick with some other stuff to make the house. Then we glue the popsicle sticks to make a house then we add the dirt. Then you are done!!! But there is one more step……. To make the character for your house a nd then you finished your turf house!!!!! Turf houses were used long ago and some still have them today. Most people in Iceland live in regular houses though. Another workshop was about volcanoes and plate tectonics. We learned about different layers to earth and plates and at the end we studied different volcanoes. We voted on which volcano was the best volcano of all...

My Tutorial for C to F

This is my video about what I think is the easiest way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. I created it because in one of our classes we had to change the temperature. We are studying Iceland and we were changing Iceland's temperature to Portland's temperature. The class was focused on glaciers and climate change. Our other workshops are plate tectonics and volcanoes, turf houses, and sheep. It was a lot of fun to make the video and I wanted to make it because I know the other classes will do the math and this might help them.
