Clubs

In 4-5 you can create a club and run the idea by the teachers to see if it's ok. If it is ok, you can present the club to all of 4-5 and people can join. If you sign up there are 4 meetings during recess. Then you can propose new clubs. Some of the clubs that have been made are Fiber Arts club, Game club, Mini Models, Fish and Horse club, Book club, Art club, P.E Action Club and Stock Market club. We think it is a good idea because it gives you opportunities to learn. new things and to have fun and maybe be a leader. You can also make new friends in the club.  By Max and Sylvan --- We wanted to write about clubs too because we like them a lot. In 4-5 we have clubs. We think about things we like to do and what people might to learn and we make a club. The clubs this week are the jewelry club, comic club, crochet club, and baking club. In the Jewelry club you can make bracelets, key chains, practically anything that you can make out of string, paper, beads, and jewels. In the comic ...

Candy Shop

In 5th grade math, we were working on money management, team work, and thinking about arrays and volume. We were split up into groups and we made candy shops. There were chocolate shops, muffin shops, cotton candy, and donuts. Every group made their own menu of ten items to sell and then we spun a wheel to see how many of each item was ordered from our store. In the beginning, we only had boxes that held 10 treats (5x2). Of course, we had a lot of treats left in our shops. Everyday we had to do the math to pay our employees, buy supplies, pay rent, and find out our profits. Sometimes there were fines and sometimes there were bonuses. Eventually, we got to decide which boxes we wanted to have in our store so we could sell more and not have so many leftover. There was a lot of teamwork, braincell building, and fun. That's what's happening in 5th grade math! Bea and Katherine.

DIRT

Just so you know, DIRT stands for Daily Independent Reading Time. That is what we call our year-long reading project in Tim's room. It is tough to finish but we know it can be done. In DIRT, you will read 7 books. It will be one book from each genre in our classroom library which includes: Mystery, Historical Fiction, Animal, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Sports, Friendship and Growing Up, and Adventure. Tim even does it! This project also includes lots of peer reviews, exit interviews, book reviews, and book chats. Peer reviews are where you meet with a friend to talk about the book. Exit interviews are when you meet with Tim about the book while book reviews are like a book report. A book chat is when you do a presentation in front of the class. The presentation has a visual aid so you could do: a poster, write a letter to the author, create a comic strip, construct a map about the book, build a scene using legos, make a book trailer, craft badges for the characters, and more.  We are...

Buddies

Buddies is when 4-5 and K-1 have a hang time but we have to be on our best behavior because K-1 looks up to us. 2-3 and EC also do it! There's a game we play called Shoe Stew. Shoe Stew is when you put your shoe in the middle and people guess who's shoe it is.  By: John Baxter P.     Photos: Tom  It's been a few weeks into the school year and we finally started Buddies! Buddies is a time every three weeks where we meet with K-1. We are the older buddy and they are the younger buddy. We read, do some projects, and sometimes we go on field trips. Sometimes in Pachanga, we get to sit with our Buddies. Pachanga is a community gathering that happens almost every Wednesday.  By Ava and Suzy

School Starts

The 4-5 Program is starting the year doing a lot of new learning. One thing we are doing is a project that focuses on us and our identity. We borrowed the style of Robert Shetterly and took photos of ourselves. We colored them so they looked like paint strokes. We then put words around our portrait that represented who we are, our identities, and the truths we want to tell. In school we learned about a lot of projects. Another project is called DIRT, Daily Independent Reading Time. The difference is that this project is a year-long project and we have to read 7 books and meet with our classmates and teachers when we are done reading.  Not everything is a project though. Sometimes we do something for just one day. We had a unit about respect and will move on to other character traits soon. We also watched a video by Grace Lin that talked about how books are like mirrors and windows. Books have power! We also went on a community trip to Kettle Cove and went swimming. The parents als...

Grandparents and Friends

On May 3rd, Grandfriends came to Waynflete to have fun and see what we have been working on lately. We read The Most Important Book and wrote our own poems. We got to have a music lesson and play math games. During our music lesson we got to sing songs like Irish Eyes and We Will Sing. We also got to listen to a replay of our chorus concert. During the math lesson we got to play Multiplication memory. We alos got to have Pachanga with the grandparents. During Pachanga, Anne (the Lower School Director) and Mary Jane (Director of Performing Arts) announced Waynflete’s 125th anniversary tune, Everyone Shine by Philip E. Silvey. Our overall rating for the day is 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. I hope you loved our blog!! By Suzy and Baxter

Solar System

The Eclipse is a rare occurrence of the sun getting blocked by the moon. It is rare because it only happens every 400 years in the same place. This year, Waynflete had an event for families. We had a fenced area on the Western Prom with free snacks, water, drinks and eclipse glasses. Not everyone was there. Some of us went to a lake near Augusta, some went to Sugarloaf, and others were in their yard. When the sky went dark it was really cool. Overall the eclipse is really cool and I hope you get to experience one. Grover and Hudson

Electricity

Electricity is the flow of electrons! That is the oath of our science class! Did you know we’re talking about electricity and matter? Did you know that air is actually matter? Neither did we! We’re also learning about atoms. fun fact! Did you know that water is made when one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms meet? Isn’t that cool!? It’s science! Everything is made up of matter so everything has atoms that are slightly vibrating, every second of every hour of every day, forever! Now we are making simple circuits and will soon work on a big science project. We learned so much in science, and we hope you do to by reading this blog. By: Esther and Katherine

Spring Concert

For the 4-5 Spring Concert we sang songs from many different cultures, places and perspectives. Our opening song was called "Dija Bulane", which comes from the island of Bali, Indonesia. We sang and had 6 peers playing the traditional ensemble, the gamelan. Our next piece was "Path to the Moon", a song about sailing the path to the moon on a deep blue night. In practice we talked about the narrator of the story, most of them being birds. The song after that was a song recommended by our own 5th grader Elsie Katz. The song was by English singer/songwriter Rose Betts. The song was called "Rocket." In the end, while we were singing the chorus, there was a descant. This means part of the group was singing "make up your mind, make up your mind, are you coming with us or staying behind", while the other part was singing “make your mind up, stand beside us.” And our last piece of the night was called “Destination Moon", a jazz standard performed by...

PE

We really like our PE class. We can do to a lot of fun things. Right now we are doing a floor hockey unit. On the first day we were not prepared but after a little practice (some passing and puck handling) we were ready. We played "messy backyard" when you try to maneuver tennis balls into the other team's net and then we got to play 6 on 6. We played with 1 goalie, 2 defenders, and 3 offenders. We had four teams for each PE class. We played 5 min halves. The goalies got to wear helmets for face protection and that was funny. It was a cool and fun unit!  Cooper and Grover

Lower School Heart

Everyone in the Lower School went to the playground for a group picture. We think it will go in the yearbook. It is a great picture!

Spirit Week 2024

Lower School D Day

D stands for a person in the lower school who we chose to celebrate on the 27th of March. Her name is Diane! We decided to celebrate her because she works very hard for all of us. She works hard to take care of the kids that come into her office to ask for a band aid, call parents, and organize our school. she is also the prison to come to when you are feeling sick etc. I am sure if you have met her you already love her. If you have not met her stop at her office and say hello.  Alex and Cooper

Cartoonist: Andrés Vera Martínez

We were so lucky to have an author to come visit. His name was Andrés Vera Martínez and he came to talk to us about comics and a little about his life. For the first part he talked to us about some of his old comics, some drafts and how he grew up. He lived in Texas and part of his culture comes from Spain and another part comes from an indigenous tribe. Then he talked to us about his newest book coming out in October called Monster Locker . For the second half Andrés showed us how to draw a character. We created one together who was a tired baker named Benny. Andrés taught us that all comics need a spark or a problem so he drew Benny with a 100 foot lizard. The comic strip came to life on the board about how Benny fed his lizard plant food and it got extra big. Lastly, we learned different features and characteristics of comic arts and drew our own character. Teagan and Ruby ---- On Thursday, March 7th, author Andrés Vera Martínez visited 4-5 to share his history and his drawings ...

Family Pachanga

On Wednesday, March 6 we had a Family Pachanga! Family pachanga is an exciting and fun experience, where your family can come and enjoy Pachanga with your kiddos! We sing fun songs like “Crowded Table” and “This Land Is Your Land”. We have Family Pachanga twice a year and we also have Grandparents and Friends day later in the spring. This Pachanga was fun because Nancy’s class taught us sign language and we get to sit in our parents’ laps. S and E

Palaver Strings Visit Pachanga

Last Wednesday (February 28) during Pachanga, Palaver Strings performed for us. Three people from the group came and played the cello, viola, and violin. They played Pop Goes The Weasel and a meditation song. It sounded beautiful. Two Lower School students take lessons from them and they got to play for us too. Even one person got to go up and try the violin who has never played before! Suzy and Baxter

Working With Clay

In art class we worked on clay projects and it was so much fun. We could do anything we wanted to do because anything is possible and we are 4-5’ers and are old enough to make our own decisions. Mary gives us some lessons and then we can go! EBK made a Cheshire Cat pot/bowl and REH made a mug with a bear popping it’s head out. All of our work is on display in the library. We had a lot of fun doing this art project. Mary is an amazing artist and a fun teacher to work with!!! #Best art teacher ever aka MARY!!! By EBK and REH

New Things

We’ve started lots of new things in 4-5 that includes books in verse, Independent Projects (IPs) and clubs! Books in verse means books that are written sort of like poems! They don’t always rhyme or sound similar, they just have different formats of words. Our class is reading Alone  and Ben Bee And The Teacher Griefer.  When we finish with our book, Tim has collected lots of other books in verse for us to read at our own pace.  IP’s are something we do every year! In 2nd grade you do a person, in 3rd you do an animal and in 4th and 5th grade you can do almost anything! Our range goes from places to animals, from plants to people! We haven’t started that just yet, but we will soon! First, we are looking at how non fiction books are written and how we take notes.  We’ve also had a new release of clubs lately, which include exotic animals club, coding club, newspaper club, paper airplane club and other fun activities! We’re having so much fun this year with that....

Spanish Loteria

This week in Spanish we are doing loteria. If you don't know what loteria is, it is a fun Spanish version of bingo where you have a board and you try and get four in a row then you win. Bingo usually has numbers and you need to get 5 in a row. A couple days ago we wrote stuff that we do a lot on a piece of paper. We had to write it in Spanish. Our Spanish teacher, Senora Meagan, translated some to Spanish, then we put them on a loteria board and printed them. When everyone was done we start playing. We have only played once but we hope to play it more in the future. It is really fun. By Grover and Hudson

Comic Catastrophe

In 4-5, we are doing a study with comics, we are learning how to draw them and reading graphic novels, for our lit class. This is probably the most interesting thing we have done in lit, in our opinion. We have learned about different styles of comics like gag cartoons, comic strips, and many more. Some parts of comics are the gutter, the little bit in between the panels, which are the squares with drawing. There are also different types of speech bubbles and how you can make different emotions with different expressions and color. Soon we will have a portfolio of three comics that will have a PSA, a memoir cartoon, and a wild card which we get to choose what we make.  Thanks for reading this weeks blog in Tales Of A 4-5 Something We appreciate the support from all of you guys!! Keep slaying besties and if you come back to this post you will see our comics.  By Anna and Teagan --- In 4-5, authors have been writing and illustrating comics! This study is all about simple and ex...
