Barn Dance

On Tuesday night we had the Barn Dance. We met in our classrooms and had a potluck. We had chili, cornbread, salad, cider, and lots of brownies and cookies. Then we went to the Big Gym. Dudley and Jaqueline Laufman, who are from New Hampshire, and Greg Boardman played fiddles, guitars, and an accordion. Dudley Laufman is really good and he was the caller. He is a National Heritage Fellow and was awarded it in 2009. He is a national treasure! Our parents were invited to come and everyone dressed to look like pioneers from the westward trails. Some of the dances were the Virginia Reel, The Grand March, Paul Jones, and The Ribbon Dance. At the end the Laufmans sang a special song to wish us happy holidays.

"I think it was really a good experience. You didn't have to participate but no one sat out, except some of the parents." Jack

"It was fun and I would like to do it again." Charlie D.

"This was so much fun. I hope 4-5 does it again." Keegan

"I like it. It was fun to dress up in costumes." Jane

☆Potluck is a celebration that we celebrate before the barn dance. We had food that people brought in and we ate for 25 minutes then we went to the P.E. gym (physical education) and we started a dance. When we got there we started to dance and it was in the big gym which is probably 45 feet.

WHAT VIVIAN THOUGHT ABOUT THE BARN DANCE

Dudley the caller was there and he was playing his accordian. The first dance was a circle dance. How it worked was you are with a partner, and you spin walk forward and back and then we doce do then spin and again go forward to the other couple.

WHAT PHOEBE THOUGHT ABOUT THE BARN DANCE

We danced with our parents and when I (Phoebe) danced with my dad I felt like I was flying because I am shorter than my dad, so I was flying like there was no tomorrow! The barn dance was one of my favorite 4-5 experiences! I think that all the other people that will do this in the future will LOVE it!!!!!!!!!! My favorite dance was the Virginia Reel, I think that was my parents favorite to!! I also liked the ribbon dance it was a lot like the Virginia Reel, just with ribbons, so how we do the Virginia Reel is first you line up, than you will walk forward, walk back, doce doe

☆WHAT OLIVIA THOUGHT ABOUT THE BARN DANCE

We mostly danced with our parents and sometimes they didn't know how to do the dance even though they watched us like 5 times! I think they were nervous! But it was fun and I think it wouldnt no no no wait… couldn't get any better, AT ALL!!! I think my favorite dance was the ribbon dance and I’m hoping that we can do this next year! But we are probably not. Unless… Something happens...

WHAT CECE THOUGHT ABOUT THE BARN DANCE

First we had the potluck. We had chili and salad and cornbread. Then we had cupcakes for dessert. We greeted everyone and got together in the big gym, and we started dancing.* There was a caller and he played the music for us and he called out the dance moves in the dances. The first dance we did was a circle dance. the next dance was the square dance. Then we started the virginia reel. The next dance was the ribbon dance!

Mystery Trip - 2025

Every year 4-5 takes a mystery trip. We don't know where we are going and we find out when we get there. Sometimes we go to the beach or a lake. The teachers kick off the conversation with absurd ideas. Sometimes it is an exotic place or a spot that doesn't even exist. This year they told us we were going to a bean factory, (which was knocked down) a farm that had a rare and elusive invisible sheep called cloud sheep, and that we would be working for the Morton Salt Company picking salt off the salt hay on the marsh. The teachers told us that after we help with the beans and salt we would get credit on the labels of the containers and we would get to bring home the wool of the cloud sheep. Last year's kick off was even more absurd. They told us we were going to a donut farm to plant donut seeds which were cheerios, go to have tea with the late Queen in England, go on a treasure hunt, and visit the cheese museum. After telling us where we were going the teachers gave us a pa...

Self Portraits

A few weeks ago, we started creating self portraits. We learned about Romero Britto and his style , which includes patterns, bold lines, bright colors and simple designs. We all added food into our Romero Britto-inspired self-portraits because we are telling people about ourselves and our favorite foods. We are doing a study called Local Foods and we are adding foods, sometimes in repetitive patterns, to our portraits. We hung the portraits in our classroom and now we can see the similarities and differences in our class. By showing our favorite foods others can relate and connect to us. We assembled the foods into bright patterns and divided the sections with thick black lines like Romero Britto. We also hid other things we like into our self portraits. We put as much detail as we could into the pieces to show our identities. After we finished them, we mounted them on black paper and hung them on the wall. We hope you like them.  This is our first blog post of the year and we work...

Grandparents And Friends

We are Kat and Suzy! We are going to be bringing you this information about Grandparents and Friends Day!!!!! On May 2, 2025 at 8:47 our Grand Friends came to Waynflete. We go to share what we are doing in school like RQs, which stands for research quest. That is a research project where we read, take notes, and write an essay. But that's not our focus of this blog so we will get back to Grandparents and Friends Day. We did some writing together, shared some math, and gave tours of our classroom. Our grandparents and friends were happy to see us and they said school was different for us than it was for them. We also had Pachanga with our grand friends. We all sang songs together like when people from Nancy's home station went up and showed everyone the motions to peace like a river in sign language! And that's a wrap! by Kat and Suzy
