Global Focus in Spain

It was so cool coming into the lobby and seeing the sights for our global focus of Spain: the flags hung across the lobby, the big silhouettes of bulls mounted on the walls and in the stairwell, and our buddies’ self-portraits with the Spanish speech bubbles with our “quotes” above them. The best thing, though, was the smells. I smelled tapas being made. Tapas are small plates of (cheese and ham) (vegetables) or other things.

This is what we are saying in our reflections. We have to write after each day to talk about what we learned and what we thought. It is fun but it is hard too.

  • "I am very excited for Global Focus this year! I thought I knew a lot about Spain but I was wrong."
  • "It's so cool see countries that are so different than ours."
  • "Walking into the lobby after a long song at WIC was magical. I had forgotten that it was all jazzed up.""It was very realistic in that we did a lot of stuff people in spain would probably do."
  • "When I did the dance I felt the rhythm, the vibration, it was amazing! It was like I was lost in another universe. I was being carried away."
  • "I love how we learn at Waynflete. Instead of taking a pen and paper test we do it physically, like Ellis Island."
  • "When I danced I felt the rhythm, the vibration. It was amazing!"
  • "My favorite part was making the Dali sculptures because they were fun."
  • "We studied artists in Spain and we made mosaics. That was awesome!" (Time Lapse Video)
  • "I learned about soccer and the teams that I never knew about."
  • "I really enjoy learning new things especially learning about new artists so it was really interesting."
  • "My favorite part of the day was cooking. Personally, I love to cook with my family so at school is a bonus."
  • "My favorite part about today was when we did the debate. I liked this because it showed how hard we worked over the last few weeks."
  • "This has been the best Global Focus I have ever had and will have."

This year's global focus is Spain. The lobby was all jazzed up with decorations that represent all of the culture. There were cut out plastic bulls, pictures of Spain and a lot of Flamenco dancing outfits. When we got to our classroom we got handed bandanas. In art we got to make clay bowls and plates with a face on it. Pablo Picasso made a bunch of these amazing plates. One kid in 4-5 (JJ) said, “I liked making plates and bowls it was fun.” One kid named DZ said, “ I feel I learned a lot when I was taught this way.”

Later in the week, the whole Lower School got together and did the spanish tradition la ofrenda. La ofrenda is a Spanish tradition where everyone comes together and puts flowers on a great statue of the saint they believe in. We put flowers on the statues of the founders of our school, Miss Lowell and Miss Chrisfield.

We do Global Focus every year because we want a chance to get to know all of the cultures of the world and get a chance to find something new because we want to learn new things. We want to know what to do when we grow up so I think that if you find something new in a new country then you might get inspired to do something when you grow up. You only have one life so you always want to try new things because there is a saying that once you die you might come back in a new form but in your new form you might not be as lucky as right now so you can not do all these cool things. So that is why we think Global Focus is important.

In art we were studyied Pablo Picasso. We molded the clay into bowls and plates and then glazed the bowls and plates with different colors. We colored abstract faces on the bowls and plates. We enjoyed using vibrant colors on our plates and bowls because we could express our feelings and emotions when we crafted them.

Pablo Picasso was an amazing artist. He crafted art someone might see as worthless while other people know its really a treasure. Here are what some of our classmates thought about our art focus.

Mystery Trip - 2025

Every year 4-5 takes a mystery trip. We don't know where we are going and we find out when we get there. Sometimes we go to the beach or a lake. The teachers kick off the conversation with absurd ideas. Sometimes it is an exotic place or a spot that doesn't even exist. This year they told us we were going to a bean factory, (which was knocked down) a farm that had a rare and elusive invisible sheep called cloud sheep, and that we would be working for the Morton Salt Company picking salt off the salt hay on the marsh. The teachers told us that after we help with the beans and salt we would get credit on the labels of the containers and we would get to bring home the wool of the cloud sheep. Last year's kick off was even more absurd. They told us we were going to a donut farm to plant donut seeds which were cheerios, go to have tea with the late Queen in England, go on a treasure hunt, and visit the cheese museum. After telling us where we were going the teachers gave us a pa...

Self Portraits

A few weeks ago, we started creating self portraits. We learned about Romero Britto and his style , which includes patterns, bold lines, bright colors and simple designs. We all added food into our Romero Britto-inspired self-portraits because we are telling people about ourselves and our favorite foods. We are doing a study called Local Foods and we are adding foods, sometimes in repetitive patterns, to our portraits. We hung the portraits in our classroom and now we can see the similarities and differences in our class. By showing our favorite foods others can relate and connect to us. We assembled the foods into bright patterns and divided the sections with thick black lines like Romero Britto. We also hid other things we like into our self portraits. We put as much detail as we could into the pieces to show our identities. After we finished them, we mounted them on black paper and hung them on the wall. We hope you like them.  This is our first blog post of the year and we work...

Grandparents And Friends

We are Kat and Suzy! We are going to be bringing you this information about Grandparents and Friends Day!!!!! On May 2, 2025 at 8:47 our Grand Friends came to Waynflete. We go to share what we are doing in school like RQs, which stands for research quest. That is a research project where we read, take notes, and write an essay. But that's not our focus of this blog so we will get back to Grandparents and Friends Day. We did some writing together, shared some math, and gave tours of our classroom. Our grandparents and friends were happy to see us and they said school was different for us than it was for them. We also had Pachanga with our grand friends. We all sang songs together like when people from Nancy's home station went up and showed everyone the motions to peace like a river in sign language! And that's a wrap! by Kat and Suzy
