Kai and Amanda’s theme class ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Kai and Amanda’s class we are studying local foods of the world. We had to write down where the local food came from and how long it took to get the food from place to place. We looked on our map in the hallway of 4-5 and figured it out. Then we had to draw a picture with our partners and color it in. We also had to write how long it took to get the seaweed there to here. If we were doing seaweed then first we would draw the seaweed in the ocean and draw a farmer picking it then going to the factory and turning it into crispy seaweed then shipping it to the store and having people buy it! After we were done, Kai or Amanda hung it up in the hallway of 4-5. It’s pretty amazing to see where the local foods are in the world. At Open House our parents saw it and they were amazed at how much we did!

Linda
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------With Linda we talked about our health and what food is healthy to eat. And we talked about nutrients. We look at foods that were good for our health and we look at food that were not so great for us. Check your dressing before you put it on your salad or whatever you put dressing on because it might turn into a dessert. Some of us researched on ketchup and we found out that it’s not entirely good for you. We also learned that berries help for heart diseases and strokes! We had partners and we had to answer questions that were on a magazine. There was information about in India if kids don’t get enough food their stomachs get really big and that’s really bad for them. The magazine shows you the food pyramid and it shows you what foods are good for you and what foods are bad. It tells you all about Nutrition. In one class at the end we put a piece of paper on our backs that said a food and we tried to guess what they were by asking questions to our group. COOL, RIGHT!!!

Nancy
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this class we were learning about types of worms and the sake of SOIL and what's in the soil. We were split up into 4 groups each with a tub with all sorts of creatures we had to discover. We looked with a microscope very closely at creatures we could find in our tub. I believe there were a couple of egg shells in 2 of the tubs. Nancy told us to try and CENTIPEDES, MILLIPEDES, EARTHWORMS, SPRINGTAILS, MITES and ISPODS. All very different and interesting creatures. The soil is from the waynflete property but mostly from Nancy’s compost at home. We saw egg sacks on the worms! One of the groups had an avocado pit in their tray! We used microscopes and looked at the Centipedes, Millipedes, Earthworms, Springtails, Mites and Isopods. One class we had two worms on a tray and we looked at them till they dried out and when they dried out we put them back in the soil. In the last class we drew some pictures of worms on Explain Everything on our iPads and showed which part it was on the worm. We also filled out a form that asked some questions about the Earthworms and we could take pictures of the Earthworms and write about them. We wrote down what they were on the picture like eggshells and avocado pits and orange peels! It’s pretty cool to look up close to Earthworms, stuff in compost and all that stuff.

TIM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Tim’s theme class we talked about plants and bees and how bees help the EARTH (pollen and nectar). We mostly did some observations on plants and what’s the important parts of plants. We also did this with bees on paper. In the first class we played a game where there were 5 flowers with some pieces of little plastic squares and the other people were bees. The bees would go around putting pollen (plastic pieces) in the flowers’ hand and taking pollen. The flowers would stand still and wait for some bees to come over. We learned that if all the bees die then there will be less food to pick from the grocery store. One kid made a joke that we would be on a pepper diet! The pesticides are helping plants grow, but killing the bees, but if we don't have pesticides the bugs will eat the plants, it's frustrating!!! If the bees die we will have no food, only fruits and veggies, but can you survive on meat? (Look up on line if you're curious),moving on… We watched a time lapse video of the bees collecting nectar and pollen and we watched flowers slowly (time lapse) grow. Observing the specialties about plants is amazing, same with bees!
