We went on a orienteering field trip to the Fore River Fields. Orienteering is when your go out in the forest and find different spots using a map and compass to add to your checklist. I was partners with Sam we had to find 12 of the 20 controls* and we punched them with a dibber*. It was really fun! After we all came back we had some time to have fun in the fields with a frisbee and a soccer ball.
*A control is a white and orange 3D triangle that you need to find.
*A dibber is a hole puncher to prove you were at the control.

Elliott is the third person in our family to be in 4/5 and to get to do orienteering. And every time I get jealous about this cool activity! I'm not very good at directions at all and I wish someone had helped me understand maps and learn better how to navigate. Have any of you ever gotten to do this kind of activity while you were running or skiing somewhere? Our family goes to Nordic Ski in Bethel, ME every year. On that course, you find gnomes all over the place and have to punch your card with the different shapes that are attached to each gnome. But the best part is the HUGE cookie you get at the end once you show the ski shop that you have completed the gnome hunt. And then every time you go back, the gnomes are in different places and you get to do it all over again.
ReplyDeleteAs I was writing this, it made me I wonder if there is such a thing as orienteering for skiers. And it turns out there is a whole sport devoted to Ski Orienteering! I never knew that.
