On Tuesday and Wednesday we got to meet the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet. Hearing them perform was really fun! They had the stand up bass, the hand drum, the classical guitar (with amp), the drums, the trumpet, the saxophone, the alto saxophone and the flugelhorn. They even played a donkey jaw! It was amazing how Walter (the guy who plays the bass) jumped in at last minute! I thought it was cool how they used the bottom of the plunger to eco the saxophone sound. I have heard it before but never known how it was done!

I thought they were really good because of their cool instruments. My favorite instrument was the donkey jaw bone. Their usual double bass player was sick so they had a replacement who had just learned the music on the drive up. He will practice more so he can be ready for the concert. I thought it was cool that the music had African, Peruvian and jazz all mixed together to make a new kind of music. I wonder how all these musical styles got mixed together. Is it because of different cultures coming to Peru through time? Peru seems like a place with lots of music, kind of like my brothers room.
